Sarnano, one of the most beautiful ‘Borghi’ in Italy

Sarnano is a small medieval town in Le Marche region, in the province of Macerata, at the foot of the Sibillini mountains, about 539m above sea level.
It is a spa and a ski resort and an excellent point of departure to visit the Sibillini mountains on foot or by bike.

Sarnano is one of the most beautiful ‘Borghi’ in Italy and its medieval centre is perfectly preserved and totally accessible.

The Medieval centre

The medieval centre, or ‘castrum’ in latin, is a museum in the open air and a thorough tour would take a minimum of half a day.

The medieval structure of the town, consisting of concentric circles that rise towards the top, allows the visitor to explore it at their ease until they arrive in Piazza Alta. Here still stand the most ancient buildings: ‘Palazzo del Popolo’ with its theatre, ‘Palazzo dei Priori’ and the romanesque church of Santa Maria.

It is not possible to visit the inside of these palaces at the moment, however, a walk itself among the narrow alleyways and little squares offers the unique opportunity to visit our past and to be immersed in an evocative and fairy tale like atmosphere.

Some of the most enchanting views of the medieval centre we would recommend are: the ‘Piazzetta della Picassera, ‘Via degli Orti’, the ‘Barbacane’, the ‘Scalette della Costa’, ‘Porta Pesa’ (commonly called ‘Arco del 300’ by the people), ‘Piazza Alta, ‘Piazza Perfetti’ and its terrace with a panoramic view.

The medieval centre has much to tell and show to an observant eye: the carvings on the stonework, the old doors, the signs left behind by the expansion of the walls, the visible traces of the architectural changes through time.

Our residence is in Sarnano and the medieval centre is within walking distance.

Sarnano and its surroundings offer opportunities for everyone: medieval towns, walking excursions, mountain biking, spa breaks, winter sports, hang gliding, museums, historical and artistic routes and fun activities for children.
